It was originally intended that the NHL would play its first season without a Toronto franchise. The players that previously belonged to the Toronto Blueshirts were eventually given to the Arenas. The new Toronto franchise existed originally without a nickname, but was eventually named the Arenas.

The season was played in two halves and the Montreal Wanderers withdrew near the beginning of the season when their arena burnt down. The Arenas captured the NHL title and the O'Brien trophy in a two game playoff (10-7) against the Montreal Canadiens; the Arenas won 7-3 on March 11th at home and the Canadiens won 4-3 March 13th at home.

Toronto played Vancouver, the winners of the PCHA, for the Stanley Cup. Since the two leagues used different rules, it was agreed that odd games would use NHA rules and even games would use PCHA rules. The Arenas won the 5 game series and the Cup with each team winning all games played under their own rules. All games were played in Toronto.
